An Inside Look at Meditation
Experiences for Healing, Support and Transformation
By Carrie Heeter, PhD, RYT200
Sometimes a book comes along that is just so good that you put aside everything else and read it cover to cover. This is such a book!
I keep thinking about a way to describe Carrie Heeter - the author of the book - but it isn’t so easy.
She is brilliant. Yes, this is true. She has a PhD and was a university professor for decades. This book was her way of easing into retirement. So that gives you a clue about the scope and range of her mind and curiosity.
She is a pioneer in the world of gaming and virtual reality. She stands out extra for being a woman in a world that did/does its best to keep women out. She persisted, as they say. Watch an interview with Carrie about her groundbreaking work here.
Ten years ago, she became interested in Yogic meditation and, in the way she has of digging the hole deeply (I knew I could get our theme in this post!), she did a yoga teacher training to learn more. She has continued to be a true student of Yoga.
She is a Yoga teacher as well! This book is her way of digesting those ten years of study and personal practice and sharing what she has discovered with all the rest of us.
An Inside Look at Meditation is the guide to meditation that we have been waiting for - clear, direct, fun to read, not filled with jargon. Carrie has the science background to write with authority about what is going on in our minds/bodies when we meditate, if that is your thing. She also has a solid decade of personal practice that means she is writing from experience, not abstract theory. And she pulls in other people with sincere practices so the reader encounters a range of reported experiences. (Full Disclosure: I am honoured to be among those whom she quotes in the book.).
The layout of the book is graphic, easy to read and fun to follow. Most of all, Carrie brings her joy on the topic to every word, illustration and the overall design. It is a delight to read something that doesn’t sacrifice depth for breadth. This book is perfect for people who are looking to start a meditation practice but there is enough new information to satisfy even longtime meditators.

Look, you can download a free pdf version if you like. But let me give you two good reasons not to do that.
First - Carrie deserves your support! She has poured a lifetime of wisdom into this book and that is worth paying for. Plus, when you buy her book, it inches up through the mysterious labyrinth of Amazon’s algorithm so more people will find it.
Second - you will have the actual book in your hands when you sit down to meditate. It won’t be cluttering up your computer, lost in some downloads folder where you never actually look at it. Buying the book means using the book!
Should that be financially impossible, you can download it here (click on the photo):
